BREAKING: Coach Foley Dumps Kogi United, Cites Poor Remuneration And Welfare
The Technical Adviser of Kogi United Football club, Folabi Ojekunle has resigned his appointment with immediate effect.
The highly revered manager announced this to newsmen shortly after Kogi United defeated visiting Adamawa United by two-nil in the MatchDay 8 of the Nigerian National League NNL played at the Confluence Stadium Lokoja on Saturday.
Coach Ojekunle said it had become inevitable and imperative to part ways with the NNL side due to some irreconcilable disagreements between him and the management of the confluence side.
The experienced gaffer disclosed that his decision was based on the poor welfare condition of the team and technical crew which he headed.
The coach also maintained that the welfare of the players and officials was as much important to the success of the team.
According to him, the lack of welfare and moral support had affected the morales of the players and collective motivations of the team.
According to him, the welfare of the team since his arrival had been abysmally poor, and unhealthy for him and his entire team.
The team, he stressed has been lacking basic needs that a normal football team should have, adding that it’s passion and determination of the entire team to clinch an NPFL ticket that has been kept them going so far.
In his words “it might interest you to know that the jersey used by my boys during their warm-up was paid for by them, this shows that we don’t have kits not to talk of sufficient alternative kits for every member of the team.
“When I joined the club, I asked for the review of the take-home pay of the players and the coaching staff, which up till now nothing has been said about it.”
“As the coach, the only Jersey I have was the one given to me during my unveiling, what am putting on now is the Jersey given to me by a fan of the team who appreciate what we are doing.”
“My accommodation up until now has not been sorted out, when I came in, I was initially taken to a place where both the coach, assistant coach of Confluence Queens and goalkeeper coach of Kogi United were staying, for my standard and as a family man I declined and they promised to place me in a hotel while they factor my accommodation.”
“The hotel arrangement made for me was to keep me there for two weeks, which as I speak to you now, I am still staying in the hotel for more than five months with expenses paid by me.”
“My feeding and water for the two weeks were not taken care of as well, putting me in an uncomfortable situation,” he said.
My position as the coach he added has been undermined by the team management and with little or no concern over what we are facing as a team.
When asked if the management is aware of the crisis and hardship faced by him and the team, coach Foley disclosed that “let them come and deny it, they are fully aware and have chosen not to act accordingly.
“I know my worth and I won’t compromise standard, in as much we love this game and love to play it, it’s necessary and essential that the right things are done from all angles to ensure the collective success of the team”. He added.
He further thanked his boys for their high level of professionalism shown despite the trying times, adding that it’s their resolve for success and encouragement that had kept him in the club so far.
Coach Foley also thanked the CSO to the governor for the support shown to him and the team and other well-meaning individuals and fans of the club who have in one way or the other supported the club while his tenure lasted.
He specially thanked the state SWAN members for the media support, adding that he would always be grateful for positive publicity given to his team while in charge.
At the end of the week eight encounter between Kogi United vs Adamawa United, Mohammed Mohammed’s 2 goals secured the vital 3 points for the team while they remain the only unbeatable team on the log table.
However, the Chairman of Kogi United Abdulmalik Isah Dolly refused to speak with journalists when he was approached for a statement on the crisis between the technical crew and the management.
Coach Folabi Ojekunle took over Kogi United FC in the build up to the 2021/2022 season of the NNL after a messy season which resulted in the relegation of the team.

Kogi United’s New Technical Adviser Eyes Club’s Redemption and Revival in Lower League
Kogi United’s Technical Adviser, Folabi Ojekunle, has expressed determination to turn around the fortunes of the club after a tumultuous period that saw him previously dismissed from his role.
In an exclusive interview with our correspondent, Coach Ojekunle addressed the challenges ahead as the team prepares to navigate the complexities of the National League One, a terrain often fraught with difficulties.
Asked about his previous dismissal, Ojekunle acknowledged the lessons learned during his time away from the club.
“I have reflected deeply on my past experiences, and I believe I have grown both as a coach and as a leader. This time, I am more prepared and focused on building a resilient team that can withstand the pressures of the lower league,” he stated.
Kogi United will be competing in a league known for its unpredictability and fierce competition.
Ojekunle expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness, emphasizing a rigorous training regimen and a focus on team cohesion. I know my qualities
“We are working hard to instill a winning mentality in the players. We understand the challenges ahead, but we are committed to putting in the effort required to succeed,” he said.
Speaking on the synergy between the coaching crew, the club’s management, and the players ahead of the team’s adventure in Nigeria League One (NLO), Coach Ojekunle stressed that “harmonious collaboration among these entities is fundamental in defining our trajectory, objectives and navigating the challenges of the league.
“Communication is key. I have had open discussions with the management about our goals, and I am fostering a supportive environment for the players. We all have a stake in this mission, and unity will be our strength.”
Acknowledging the political landscape that often influences football, Ojekunle is implementing strategies to ensure consistency in performance.
“We are focusing on discipline and accountability within the team. By creating a culture of professionalism, we can challenge for every point and rise above external distractions,” he explained.
Regarding the state government’s indifferent stance on sports, especially football, Ojekunle urged the authorities to promptly improve the state of the Confluence Stadium to boost Kogi United’s chances in its endeavors.
From the complex, the football pitch, audience stand, running tracks, Tennis Courts, Gymnasium, boxing ring and handball pitch, the architecture masterpiece now battles its ruin and despair.
Inaugurated in 2014 under former Governor Ibrahim Idris, the Confluence Stadium has deteriorated significantly due to neglect by both past and present administrations over the years.
“While infrastructure and support are critical, we are committed to making the most of what we have. We will engage with local communities and stakeholders to garner support and resources for the team.”
On the targets set by the club, Ojekunle said they are ambitious yet surmountable.
“Every challenge can be met with the right mindset and preparation. I see this as an opportunity to prove ourselves and to build a foundation for future success,” he remarked.
Ojekunle who recognized the need to rekindle the passion of Kogi United’s supporters given the dwindling fan support, said all hands are on deck to revive the organic love of the people.
“We are working on initiatives to engage with our fans, including community outreach programs and fan events. We want them to feel a part of this journey and to believe in the potential of this team,” he said.
In conclusion, Ojekunle stated that he was fully aware of the potential of the game as a tool for national and economic development, and pledged to leverage on the enormous talents in the state to develop the game.
“We aim to tap into the local talent pool and create pathways for young players. By investing in grassroots football, we can enhance our objectives and contribute positively to the community,” he concluded.
As Kogi United embarks on this new chapter under Coach Folabi Ojekunle emphasised that with determination, strategic planning, and community support, the team can rise from the shadows and reclaim its place in Nigerian football.
The erudite gaffer acknowledged the contribution of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo positive impact in grassroot development of the round leather game, and the unwavering commitment of the team’s management.
